Day 7: Oh Elma!!!

Sitting on the dock eating breakfast.

We left Twanoh in no real hurry this morning.  The sun was shining and we took our time breaking camp and packing up.  When we finally did head out, we were treated with cool weather and flat roads; both of which were much appreciated.  About 10 miles in we were suprised by a detour on highway 101.  Unsure of what to do we inquired with a nearby shop keeper about the best route to get to our destination.  We learned a valuable lesson from this local.  This individual has no concepts of hills or they have never ridden a bike.  The next 20 miles or so were all up hill and not much to see.  Luckily at the end of the uphill we had a front row seats to Mt. Rainer...  From the time we started this biking adventure, Matt had mentioned to me that we would be more than half way through Washington when we got to the city of Elma.  Since then it has been the carrot in front of me.  The day was tough and with some beautiful sites but I was most excited to see that sweet, sweet, green city sign of Elma!  We ended up staying in a hostel that night with other cyclist sharing road stories and cooking tips.

  1. Nice Hevibeads plug ;)

We've realized that you never ask a local for directions who is walking on foot...eventually they would lead us to a one-way or an alley way we couldn't drive down. Their directions were always as if we were on foot too because they most likely didn't own a car.

I guess this lesson definitely applies to cyclists vs motorists. We'll have to keep that in mind we give a cyclist directions!
